Autism Breakthrough: New Research that May Prevent Autism in Children

This new announcement feels like a moment of validation. We’re learning that everyday medicines like acetaminophen, often used during pregnancy, might play a role in autism risks. The government is working on adding warnings to help expecting moms make safer choices, which could protect future Blooming Minds students. They also talked about looking at how vaccines are given to young children, suggesting that spacing them out might be gentler on little bodies. They pointed to communities like the Amish, where autism seems less common, as a reason to keep studying this carefully. And they highlighted how not getting enough folic acid—a nutrient vital for growing brains—might be part of the puzzle, too.
A Reflection on Charlie Kirk’s Legacy: Courage, Debate, and Community
We were shocked upon learning of Charlie Kirk’s tragic death—he was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking onstage at Utah Valley University during his “American Comeback Tour.” The suddenness of this violent act sent waves of sorrow and disbelief through communities across the nation, and it also hit home for us here in Wheeling, being so physically close to his hometown roots. Born on October 14, 1993, Charlie Kirk studied at Wheeling High School — right here in our community. That fact alone gives his story a special connection for us. For students in Wheeling, his path leaves a lasting legacy: proof that even from this small corner of Illinois, voices can rise to influence national conversations. Throughout his life, Kirk was a prominent political activist, unafraid to voice his convictions, even when they clashed with prevailing media or cultural narratives. That courage was central to his identity—as founder of Turning Point USA and a frequent campus speaker, he consistently engaged in public dialogue. What defined him was not simply his political stance, but his willingness to debate, to hear opposing viewpoints, and to stand firmly for what he believed. His example underscores the enduring value of open dialogue. For educators, this raises an essential reminder: the purpose of education should not be to instruct students what to think, but to equip them with the skills to know how to think. Students must learn to lead with ideas, not simply follow the ideas of others. By encouraging debate, sharpening critical thinking, and embracing diverse viewpoints, we prepare young people to carry themselves with conviction—just as Kirk did. And whether or not one always shared his opinions, the courage to voice deeply held convictions deserves respect. That same spirit resonates here in Wheeling, where we strive to cultivate creativity, leadership, and resilience in our students. Our goal is not only to help them succeed academically, but also to shape them into thoughtful contributors and leaders who are prepared to face the challenges of the future with confidence and principle. In the end, whether one agreed or disagreed with Charlie Kirk’s positions, his legacy underscores a lasting truth: courage in thought and debate matters. It is a lesson worth carrying forward for every student in our community, reminding us that real growth happens when we dare to think critically, speak boldly, and lead with integrity. Why Summer Reading Matters at Blooming Minds STEAM Academy

At Blooming Minds, we believe that reading isn’t just about learning words—it’s about building imagination, deepening thinking, and connecting to the world. This summer, we’re encouraging all of our students to make reading a daily habit. Whether it’s 10 minutes before bed or a cozy afternoon story, these small moments make a big impact. Why it matters: We understand every child is different—some are eager listeners, others need shorter sessions. That’s okay. We ask all families to read at least 10 books with their children this summer, selected from our suggested reading list. This is a precious window of time—before electronics become the center of attention—where we can help children fall in love with stories, imagination, and learning. Let’s make it count. 💛📖 Thank you, parents, for being our partners in raising thoughtful, curious readers! SUMMER READING LIST
How to Raise a Child Who Grows Up Truly Happy and Fulfilled
We all want our children to be successful. But what does success really mean? How do we define success today? The Money Myth: Are We Chasing the Right Goal? In today’s world, success is too often measured by wealth. We live in a culture where money equals security, safety, and power. Our ancient instincts—left over from a world of sabretooth tigers and food scarcity—tell us: the more we have, the safer we are. Afterall, wealth will allow you to eat better food, find better doctors, accountants, lawyers when you need one, travel better, live in a bigger house, drive better cars, wear more expensive clothes. But will all of this bring you more happiness? As they say, statistics don’t lie. According to the National Library of Medicine, physicians are 44% more likely to die by suicide than the general population. In a study of nearly 13,000 lawyers, 28% experienced depression, 19% reported anxiety, and 21% had alcohol use problems. Investment banking, while less documented, is known for its relentless pressure and elevated mental health risk. Of course, there may be many contributing factors, but may lack of purpose and chasing a high-paying job be one of them? Even during biblical times, those with riches were not always the most fulfilled or the most secure. Today’s media sings a similar tune: no money, no love, or, worse, no money, no life! But if money truly guaranteed happiness, why do so many wealthy people feel deeply lost? Why are depression and burnout rampant in high-earning professions like law and medicine? These are prestigious, high-paying careers. So why is fulfillment so elusive? Because money cannot provide what the soul craves: purpose. For some families, the answer begins with God—a deep, guiding presence in our lives. For others, it may be a sense of purpose, community, or personal mission. No matter the belief system, one truth remains: success without meaning leaves us empty. And our children, more than anything, need meaning. What Really Leads to Fulfillment? Psychologist Abraham Maslow defined the pinnacle of human need as self-actualization—becoming the best version of ourselves. But his student, Viktor Frankl, went further. He argued that meaning—not success, not comfort—is what drives human beings to thrive, even in the darkest conditions. And where does meaning come from? From service, creativity, faith, and a deep sense that our lives matter beyond ourselves. Helping Our Children Discover Purpose As parents and educators, we have a sacred task: to guide children toward meaningful lives. We cannot define their purpose for them—but we can create the environment in which purpose grows. At Blooming Minds STEAM Academy, this philosophy is central to everything we do.
