A Parent’s Guide to a Fun, Enriching Summer
Summer camp can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a child’s life — offering a chance to learn new skills, make lasting friendships, and build confidence. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right camp for your child?
Here are some key factors to consider when selecting the perfect summer program:
- Safety First.
Whether it’s one of the overnight camps or day camps, safety of the child should always come first. I’m not talking about a possibility for your son or daughter scratching and bruising their knee because they fell while chasing someone else. That’s a real-life situation that can happen whether your child is at home or in a summer camp: frequently, it’s part of growing up and being free to play active games. I am talking about major safety. You should ask the following questions:
- Are counselors maturing enough to look after your child?
- Who is responsible for the counselors?
- If a camp is overnight: who is watching the counselors at night? (This may seem an inappropriate question to ask until you learn that some young counselors prefer to party at night when they are supposed to watch the kids).
- Is the staff trained in CPR and first aid?
- Are field trips and swimming activities properly supervised?
- Are there clear procedures for emergencies and daily routines?
Of course, we cannot put out children in a bubble, and the older they are the more responsibility children will have to take care of themselves no matter where they are, but having reliable people around your camper is crucial to the safety of your child, and a lot will depend on the adults around.
2. Your Child’s Health Is Important.
Summer is here, and we, as parents, want to see our children outdoors as much as possible. Afterall, outdoor time is so important for children’s health. But what about camps that have only outdoor space or that offer intense physical exercise during pick temperature times?
- How healthy is it for your child to run outdoors when temperatures reach 90 degrees, regardless of whether they have sunscreen or not? There should be a balance of outdoor and indoor time to make sure children are protected from direct sunlight and from having a heat stroke.
- Is there a combination of active time and down time to accommodate children who are shy and require more personal or quiet time?
- Are they having meals in a shaded area with access to the fridge, so that the food doesn’t go bad?
3.Understand Your Child’s Interests and Needs
Every child is different. Some may love outdoor adventure and sports, while others thrive in creative, academic, or hands-on STEM activities.
Ask yourself:
- Does my child prefer indoor or outdoor activities?
- Are they excited about science, art, math, leadership, or sports?
- Do they enjoy structured activities, or would they benefit from more free exploration?
Choosing a camp that matches their natural interests will keep them engaged, excited, and motivated to learn.
4. Look for a Balance of Fun and Growth
Summer should be a time for fun — but it can also be a time for tremendous personal and academic growth. Afterall, summer slide is real. Children do forget about 20-40% of what they learned in school during summer months.
The best camps blends:
- Hands-on learning (like STEM, public speaking, or business projects)
- Physical activity (like swimming and outdoor play)
- Creative exploration (like art, cooking, or music)
A well-rounded camp keeps young minds active, strengthens skills, and boosts confidence — all while making sure kids look forward to each day.
5. Consider Group Size and Individual Attention
Smaller group sizes often mean more personal attention, better safety, and stronger relationships between campers and instructors.
When choosing a camp, ask:
- What is the camper-to-staff ratio?
- How well do counselors get to know each child?
- How does the camp support both socialization and individual growth?
Children flourish when they feel seen, valued, and supported.
6. Check the Camp’s Values and Community Atmosphere
Camp is more than just activities — it’s a community where children develop friendships, learn teamwork, and build character.
Look for programs that:
- Promote kindness, respect, and leadership
- Foster a positive, welcoming environment
- Celebrate each child’s individuality and potential
